From Seville to Tokyo: The Incredible Odyssey of Fran, the Engineer who Conquered Japan and Social Networks
A young Andalusian narrates his jump to the Far East, revealing keys to success in the country of the rising sun and succeeding in the creation of digital content.
Fran, a Sevillian with giant dreams, decided a few months ago to make a radical change in his life. He left behind the familiarity of his homeland to embark on an unprecedented adventure in Japan. What began as a childhood curiosity fueled by anime and Japanese culture has transformed into a vital experience that he shares daily with thousands of followers on social networks, where his videos reach million-dollar figures.
“I have always been very interested in Japanese culture, since I was a child I watched anime and everything related to Japan caught my attention. That curiosity stayed there for years, until in 2023 I decided to come on a trip for the first time,” confesses Fran. That first raid was a blast.
“I stayed for about two weeks and the experience was incredible. I loved everything: the way of living, the culture, the day-to-day life… I idealized it quite a bit, to be honest. From then on the idea stuck in my head that I wanted to try living here,” he explains with a smile that can be sensed through his words.
With a solid background in Computer Engineering in Spain, where he worked for four years, Fran made a bold decision: look for job opportunities in Japan without mastering the language. “And last year I made the decision to take the step and start looking for a job in Japan, although I practically didn't know Japanese. After a few months of searching, I got a job in a company in Japan that helped me with all the procedures, visa and paperwork, and since September of last year I have been living in Japan.”
The path has not been without challenges, especially for those who are not fluent in Japanese. “Finding a job that allows you to stay long-term is complicated, because the important thing is not only to work, but also for the company to give you a visa to be able to reside in the country,” he warns.
The requirements to obtain a visa are, according to Fran, quite strict. “For example, they normally ask you for a university degree related to the job you are going to do. And if you don't speak Japanese, the number of opportunities is greatly reduced,” he details.
However, Fran was fortunate to work in the IT sector. “In my case I was lucky because I work in the IT, programming and computing sector, which is in high demand all over the world, including in Japan. In addition, Japan has a major problem of population aging: many people retire and not enough young people enter the labor market. That is why they are increasingly turning to foreign workers,” he points out.
The range of professions in high demand in Japan extends beyond technology. “In addition to IT, I know a lot of people who work as architects. There are also many foreigners in the tourism sector, working as guides, in hotels or customer service,” Fran shares.
Another sector with great potential for foreigners is language teaching. “Another sector where there is a lot of demand is language teaching, especially English teachers, but also Spanish and other languages,” he adds, offering a complete vision of job opportunities in the Asian country.
Fran's story is an inspiring testimony of how perseverance, audacity and curiosity can open unimaginable doors, even in cultures as different as Japan. Its success on social media demonstrates that sharing authentic experiences resonates with a global audience, creating bridges between continents and cultures.
