Svetislav Pesic hangs up the board: goodbye to a European basketball legend
The coach who led Barça to glory in the Euroleague retires after more than four decades of career, but his legacy will live on
The world of European basketball is preparing for a season with a huge void on the benches. Svetislav Pesic, the coach who led FC Barcelona to its first Euroleague and who currently directs Bayern Munich, announced that this season will be the last of his career after more than 40 years on the bench.
Although his retirement marks the end of an era, NBA figures are confident that Pesic still has a lot to offer. Among them stands out Erik Spoelstra, coach of the Miami Heat, who maintains a relationship of deep respect and admiration for the veteran Balkan coach.
Spoelstra remembers his first contact with Pesic in the 90s, when they met in Germany. At that time, Spoelstra was a player and assistant coach for TuS Herten, while Pesic managed Alba Berlin. Since then, the American coach considers Pesic a constant source of learning and an example of professionalism.
“I haven't spoken to him recently, but I'll send him an email. I didn't know he was retiring. He's extremely dedicated and I'm sure he'll continue to be involved in basketball, perhaps in a general manager or president role,” Spoelstra said from Toronto. Pesic, for his part, announced that he will continue to be active in sports through courses and training activities, although he did not anticipate occupying a relevant position in teams.
The Miami coach highlights Pesic's lucidity and motivation: “I spent time with him this summer and he remains as focused as ever. We shared a meal before training and I was grateful that he took the time to talk to me.” This approach occurred during Spoelstra's follow-up to EuroBasket, where Pesic coached Serbia.
Spoelstra, who led LeBron James to his first two championships with the Heat, has closely followed the career of Pesic and his teams. The connection with Serbia was reinforced by Nikola Jovic, a young international talent for the Heat who is also part of the Balkan team.
Regarding the conversation they had at that lunch, Spoelstra explained: “We talked about everything, not just basketball. It was a talk about life and how to manage this lifestyle in our business. I have known Pesic for a long time and I have always respected him. It was a valuable opportunity to share that time with him.”
Pesic's influence was felt even in international confrontations. Spoelstra suffered his wisdom in the historic 2024 semifinal between Serbia and Team USA, where the NBA giants — LeBron, Curry and Durant — had to do their best to beat the team led by Nikola Jokic by a tight 95-91.
After leaving the Serbian national team last summer, Pesic will complete his final season with Bayern Munich before retiring from the dugout completely. However, according to Spoelstra, his legacy and teachings will continue to influence basketball from the offices and beyond the court, as he did for decades.
